About ARCE’s Research and Academic Programs

Since the early 20th century, the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) has supported research, preservation, and promotion of Egyptian history and culture while actively strengthening American-Egyptian cultural collaboration. Our mission is to ensure Egyptian cultural heritage endures and inspires future generations. Through our Academic Research department, we offer free monthly lectures in Cairo and online for global audiences. We also organize an Annual Meeting in the spring, and regional conferences, and workshops throughout the year.

According to our 2025 ARCE Community Survey, over half of respondents (57.7%) identify as researchers of cultural heritage or Egyptian history, with 42.2% engaging with ARCE to advance their careers and studies. This shows how central the research community is to the future of Egyptology and Middle Eastern Studies in Egypt.

Fellowships

Our fellowship programs e empower students, researchers, and emerging scholars to study Egypt’s rich historic eras firsthand, working alongside Egyptian scholars and institutions. ARCE offers funded fellowships and a research associate program across diverse fields to conduct research in Egypt. Our alumni include university faculty, museum curators, and leaders in Egyptology and Middle Eastern studies who have made significant contributions to Egypt-related research since 1957.

Why Now?

Global understanding depends on preserving the past. Fellowship opportunities – once critical for advancing graduate and early career professionals – rely heavily on funding. Without adequate funding, ARCE’s ability to support innovative research and enable international exchange will be minimal. Your investment helps protect and share Egypt’s ancient Jewish, Coptic Christian, and Islamic heritage—ensuring these stories carry on into the future.

How You Can Support Us

Funding cuts have put our programs at risk. ARCE continues its academic and scientific mission, but costs for fellowships, lectures, and workshops remain high. ARCE aims to raise funds to cover these essential expenses for both Egyptian and American fellows. Our mission thrives thanks to support from individuals, communities, and foundations. We invite you to join us in advancing this vital work.

With your support, fellows will:

  • Conduct research at archaeological sites, monasteries, and cultural landmarks
  • Collaborate with Egyptian universities, archives, and museums
  • Engage in immersive language and cultural study (Ancient Egyptian, Coptic, Arabic)
  • Share their findings through teaching, publications, and public scholarship

Whether you are an individual donor or contributing on behalf of an institution, your donation can be also be designated to sponsor lectures or workshops or to support larger programming.

Thank you for your consideration.
