The Sixth Annual Missouri Egyptological Symposium (#MOEgypt6) will take place at the University of Missouri – Columbia on September 20-21, 2024, and is organized by the American Research Center in Egypt, Missouri Chapter. Presenters do not have to be from Missouri or currently reside in the state. All are invited to share research with our Missouri community of Egyptologists and students of ancient history.

The Missouri Egyptological Symposium Series is driven by goals of inclusivity and opportunity. To this end, we are particularly eager to hear from MA and PhD students who may be looking for a supportive space to present new work. We also welcome abstracts from academics, museum professionals, independent scholars, and students at all stages of their careers for in-person papers.

Presenters will give 15-20 min live presentations in English followed by a 5 min Q&A.

There is no set theme this year and we welcome paper proposals that address any aspect of ancient Egypt and Sudan from earliest habitation through modern reception studies.

Papers may address subjects such as

  • history
  • language
  • archaeology
  • art

Abstracts for papers should be no longer than 300 words. Successful abstracts will introduce the paper topic and outline some of the considered evidence and conclusions. Space is limited, and as such abstracts will be vetted.

The symposium and all paper presentations will take place in person on Saturday, September 21st.

The evening before the paper presentations, September 20th, we will have a pre-conference social event at the games store Hexagon Alley, in Columbia. Appetizers will be provided, and there is a full bar and a snack and sandwich menu for those who desire something more substantial. In addition to socializing, we will have the opportunity to play a variety of board games that take their inspiration from ancient Egypt.

The deadline to apply is August 19, 11:59pm CST. Notification of acceptances/rejections will go out by September 1, 2024.
