Lecture Information:

Pharaonic stone statues may embody permanence and solidity for viewers today, but recent work has revealed that they had busier existences than their size, durability, and weight might make one think. Statues were routinely moved from one location to another, and reworked to give them up-to-date costumes, features, and names. This tradition of re-imagining continued after the Dynastic period, with Roman and Modern consumers also changing figures to reflect changing tastes. This lecture provides a guide to over three thousand years of use and abuse of Egyptian sculptures.
