Lecture Information:

The Carlos Museum is currently working to fill in the object histories for its collection of over 35,000 objects. Provenance research on the collection will sometimes suggest a decision to repatriate an object to its source country. Through an evidence-based approach, the Carlos has engaged in both legal and ethical repatriations with Greece, Italy, and Egypt. In this talk, Dr. Annie Shanley will go over the Museum’s approach to weighing legal and ethical issues for objects in the Museum’s collection and how having a close working relationship with source countries makes this work possible. The talk will be illustrated with examples of objects in the Museum’s collection that have been studied.
