Special Exhibition lecture and book signing, Chicago on the Nile: 100 Years of the Epigraphic Survey. We are excited to host Emily Teeter for a lecture that will celebrate the history and impact of 100 years of field work by ISAC’s Epigraphic Survey in Luxor, Egypt. Following the lecture Emily Teeter will sign copies of her new book, Chicago on the Nile. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures at the University of Chicago and ARCE Chicago.
Speaker Bio
Emily Teeter holds a PhD in Egyptology from the University of Chicago. She is a Research Associate of the Negaunee Integrative Research Center, the Field Museum in Chicago, and an Associate of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures at the University of Chicago. Formerly a curator and special exhibits coordinator at the Oriental Institute (now ISAC), she is now co-curator for the new galleries of Egyptian and African art at the Field Museum scheduled to open in 2027. Her main area of interest includes the intersection of material culture and popular religion. She is the author of many books including Religion and Ritual in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Egypt: Treasures from the Collection of the Oriental Institute, and Chicago on the Nile: A Century of Work by the Epigraphic Survey of the University of Chicago, and co-author of a forthcoming catalog of the Art Institute’s Egyptian collection. She has curated many permanent and temporary exhibits, including “Chicago on the Nile,” on view at the Museum at ISAC from September 2025 through March 2025. She is a past president of the American Research Center in Egypt, and she serves as the editor of that organization’s academic journal.
