ARCE Statement on the Protection of Cultural Heritage
The American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) has dedicated itself to strengthening cultural ties and research exchange between the United States and Egypt for the objective of preserving Egyptian cultural sites, objects, and historical records. Egypt, and indeed much of the region, houses a significant portion of the world’s ancient and medieval archaeology, and these invaluable survivals of our collective human history and achievement must be safeguarded – now and always – from the threat of purposeful or otherwise preventable destruction and loss. ARCE stands with such institutions as the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), and many others, in their condemnation of the destruction, implied or actual, of heritage sites worldwide.
