ARCE ANNOUNCES THE DEPARTURE OF DR. GERRY SCOTT
ARCE ANNOUNCEMENT BY MELINDA HARTWIG, ARCE PRESIDENT

It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that last year Dr. Gerry D. Scott announced that he would not seek another term as ARCE Director, and the Board of Governors announces that in March 2017 we will begin a transition of executive leadership.
Dr. Scott will attend his final Annual Meeting as Director in April, and we hope that all ARCE members will attend the Business Meeting to say "thank you" for his long and remarkable service. Since 2003, Gerry has played a critical role in the development and success of the organization, and while we will miss his leadership, we wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors.

We want to thank Gerry for his 14 years of dedicated service, which involved many significant accomplishments, including:
  • Negotiating and securing a number of highly important USAID grants for the preservation of Egypt's cultural heritage and the training of future antiquities professionals
  • Establishing ARCE's Antiquities Endowment Fund Grants (AEF) and awarding 113 AEF grants in conservation, training and publication
  • Raising $3.2 million dollars for ARCE's Endowment Campaign
  • Aiding the recovery of Egypt's Museum of Islamic Art that was damaged as a result of a bomb blast
  • Providing conservation and site management work programs to assist the local economy in Luxor
  • Reinvigorating ARCE's publications and producing nine scholarly volumes

Under Gerry's stewardship, ARCE raised more than $43 million in gifts and grants, which allowed ARCE and its member institutions to carry out a number of important projects in Pharaonic, Coptic, and Islamic monuments and sites.

Over the following months, Gerry will work with ARCE's new Executive Director, Jane Zimmerman, to provide a seamless and successful transition of authority.

Again, we cannot thank Gerry enough for his dedication, motivation and vision he has given over the past 14 years. He will be greatly missed by the staff, Board, members and partners alike.
