Conservation of Mut Temple

Director: Betsy Bryan, The Johns Hopkins University
April 2007 - ongoing

ARCE continues to support the Conservation of the Mut Temple Foundations project, directed by Dr. Betsy Bryan of the Johns Hopkins University. Intermittent rise and fall of the sacred lake over many centuries has caused subsidence on the west side of the temple, creating a slippage of more than10 centimeters in some areas of the wall.

The JHU team has dismantled and rebuilt two walls of the temple on the west side due to their poor condition and displaced foundations. This work first required thorough documentation of the wall before any blocks were removed. Once the blocks were removed, the paving was lifted from beneath the level of the two walls in order to expose the slipped foundation blocks. These were reset and then the walls were rebuilt.

This labor-intensive undertaking, carried out by stone mason Franck Burgos, will counteract the effects of long-term water and salt damage to the building foundations and preserve Mut Temple.

In addition, work begun under an ARCE EAP grant to reveal and remove column sections from a porch of Hatshepsut, first discovered in 2004, also continues. Dr. Bryan's work has revealed that early in the reign of Thutmose III, column drum elements of a porch of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III from their co-regency had been dismantled and reused in the foundations when the temple was enlarged. Later this year, the team intends to rebuild the porch, along with elements of a limestone gate that had been buried with the columns. These reconstructions will be a focal point for visitors to Mut Temple in years to come.
